Ask The Vet - Dogs
QUESTION: My puppy died of Parvo last week, how long before I can get
another one?
ANSWER: Parvo is passed by fecal-oral transmission. The poop, carries the
virus. When the poop dries on the ground, grass, cement etc. the virus is
released into the environment, where it can live up to 1 year. When an
unvaccinated dog licks, eats, chews grass, dirt, rocks, the cement, it picks up
the virus. It takes between 4 and 14 days for the virus to develop into the
disease. The vaccine is very effective and protects well. You need to give it
every year and puppies under 6 months should receive a series of 3, separated
by 3 weeks.
